Sound Production Magazine Lists Joshua Lutz The East Coast Contact For Functional Period Microphones

The latest issue of Production Sound & Video magazine is out and they’ve listed me as the sole east coast contact for functional period microphones! This is awesome and I am super grateful to Tod and Terrance Maitland for submitting me (A Complete Unknown, What Happens At Night, Deliver Me From Nowhere). This is the kind of highlight I need for my budding career as Audio Tech Specialist and as we head further into the world of AI (and the evaporating creative space), I am grateful to still be finding creative work in film in 2026.

Let’s just hope and pray this mention of me translates into more new work!

Tod Maitland is a six-time Academy Award nominated sound production mixer and business partner of mine. His nephew, Terrance Maitland has been his right hand man and boom op for dozens of movies (and is one of the nicest humans alive).

I was recently called in by Tod and Terrance to mic up a beautiful vintage Steinway Piano on the Martin Scorsese film set, “What Happens At Night”, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence. Tod (Sound Production Mixer) was unable to achieve a clean sound from the upright piano and had a few nice Coles and Schoeps condenser mics on the back of the piano, out of shot. I immediately knew he needed to somehow get high end mics into the piano without being seen by the camera. I was able to cheat some mics into the front, under the sound panel by removing the lower front “kickboard” and routing a KM84 and a Beyer Dynamic M140 on either end of the soundboard. This yielded a full range of frequency response with the shimmering highs of the SDC pencil Neumann mic and the big beautiful mid-lows from the dual ribbon element in the Beyer M140 on the lower strings. Combined, Tod was able to get a nice full bodied sound from these two mics, which were both hidden inside and mounted cleanly using my Triad Orbit-Micro mounts. He called me the next day and exclaimed, “It sounds like a record! Wow!”

I have worked on set with Tod and Terrance Maitland on three music-based movies thus far (A Complete Unknown, Deliver Me From Nowhere and now What Happens At Night) and couldn’t be more impressed with their decorum and knowledge! They are Hollywood’s powerhouse sound department and I’m extremely proud to call them friends.
